Lucy and Rob

Chic style combined with the enchanting winter season set the scene for Lucy and Rob’s special day at Gaynes Park

School teachers Lucy and Rob got engaged while on holiday in Bordeaux. Despite the rainy weather Rob kept to tradition, getting down on one knee on a cobbled street in the city. “Even though we’d talked about marriage I was still really surprised when Rob popped the question. He’d even designed my engagement ring – which made it even more precious to me,” smiles Lucy.

Rural romance

Once back home in Essex the couple began the search for their wedding venue. Having visited seven already – that hadn’t quite hit the spot – Rob and Lucy hoped that their eighth venue visit, to Gaynes Park, would be a success. “As soon as we drove in the gates of Gaynes Park, we fell in love. The buildings were beautifully rustic inside and out, which was an important factor for us because we were having a winter wedding. It was just breath-taking,” remembers Lucy.

“As soon as we drove in the gates of Gaynes Park, we fell in love.”

Oh so stylish

Chic and elegant was the style of the day for Lucy and Rob. While Lucy opted for an ivory lace gown with satin detail and a Sabrina neckline, Rob chose a blue slim fit suit with an ivory shirt and grey/silver tie – also worn by his best man and ushers. As the dress itself featured lots of detail, Lucy decided to keep her jewellery minimal – wearing her late grandmother’s earrings as her “something old”, along with a vintage headpiece and sparkly pair of Jimmy Choo shoes.

Lucy’s bridesmaids complemented the couples’ style with jewel-toned dresses in ruby, sapphire, amethyst, emerald and gold. For that winter wedding look, the girls also wore ivory fur shrugs, which fastened with pearl buttons. “They all looked so beautiful,” says Lucy.

Naturally beautiful

The chic theme continued throughout the couple’s wedding décor with cream and natural colours being a strong feature. To complement the bridesmaid dresses and winter season, Lucy also added touches of green and purple to give their wedding style some more depth. “We had mercury glass antique decorations, vintage style keys, hearts and lace snowflakes all hung from the beams with twine amongst small bunches of wild flowers. We also collected jars and decorated them with cream lace and twine and popped in flowers and tea lights,” explains Lucy.

Let them eat cake

Lucy and Rob’s chic, rustic theme was also reflected in the style of their wedding cake. Rather than opt for a traditional tiered cake, the couple picked several normal cakes and topped with pretty cake toppers. “We got to have cakes in all our favourite flavours – chocolate fudge, carrot cake, victoria sponge, lemon drizzle and raspberry bakewell,” she adds.

Winter wonderland

Of course, being winter, the couple couldn’t resist incorporating some more seasonal décor. They decorated Mill Barn with ivy, a wooden sleigh to hold their cards and gifts and light up letters spelling their surname, Frost. Their wedding favours consisted of wooden Christmas decorations ranging from snowflakes to snowmen, Christmas trees, stars, presents, hearts, stockings, angels and doves.

Baby it’s cold outside

Lucy and Rob tied the knot at Gaynes Park one rainy, yet beautiful, December day. “My favourite part of the day was walking down the aisle and seeing Rob’s face as I came into the Orangery. He looked so happy and simple said “wow!”” smiles Lucy. “Despite the rain, the venue was perfect. It lent itself to the adverse weather conditions as the coach house provided a fabulous setting for photos, sheltered from the weather,” she adds. For their wedding breakfast, they enjoyed a feast of goat’s cheese crostini for starters, sausage and mash for their main and raspberry panna cotta for pudding.

Come evening, the couple celebrated with friends and family to the sounds of wedding band, One Foot In The Grove. The band played first dance song, Sweet Disposition by Temper Trap, chosen because of the couple’s love of the film 500 Days of Summer. They ended the night with All I Want For Christmas – the perfect ending to the day and a fabulous start to upcoming holiday.

Lucy’s top tips:

  • Don’t worry about the weather – it really won’t matter on the day. We made the most of our rainy day and I’d advise all brides to do the same. Relax and enjoy it!
  • Make sure the groomsmen know the plans for the day. Have an in-depth briefing with them before the big-day and make sure they know what they are responsible for.
  • Decide what’s important to your wedding and keep that in mind at all times. It’s so easy to get swept up in ideas and overwhelmed by it all.
